Summary: I'm Dan Hope and deep inside my head I keep a list of things I want to come true. For example, I want my sister, Ninja Grace, to go to university at the North Pole and only come back once a year.
I want to help Sherlock Holmes solve his most daring mystery yet. And if it could be a zombie mystery, all the more exciting.
I want to be the first eleven-year-old to land on the moon.
I want my dog to stop eating the planets and throwing them up on the carpet.
And finally, the biggest dream of all, I want my dad to love me.  - goodreads
A Boy Called Hope is the perfect book to accompany you to your bed in these cold, winter days. It will bring a spark to your eyes and warm your heart like a mug of tea: slowly, then all at once, as the hot liquid seeps through your body after a few sips. It is a quick read, not because it's too short but because you won't ant to put it down and will read it in one sitting when you should really be asleep (oops) , when the night is black and the clock hand creeps steadily onward. I flew through the pages as if i was riding Dan's Hope 1 rocket, eyes glued to the words flowing before my eyes, oblivious to my surroundings.
The book, while not a young adult, engrossed me completely. Devoid of the intricate threads of description that usually form webs on the pages of books i tend to gravitate towards - the book was a breath of fresh air to my stress-weary, revision-filled mind, and the simple writing was a blessing for me;  for it took nothing away from the story - if anything - it enhanced the eleven year old voice of Dan, making him seem genuine and real; and instead of hiding behind complicated, mature descriptions, his character jumped off the page towards me.
hope [hohp]
noun: hope; plural noun: hopes
1. a feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen
Dan; the 'hero' of the story: desperate to be reunited with his  dad but faced with obstacles along the way, that seemed to him - to come out of nowhere. His blunders, the things he turned a blind eye to that seemed obvious to me, made me smile. His mistakes, his determination, his triumphs, were like a bold spark in a crackling fire- illuminating its surroundings. And then came his sister.
'Ninja' Grace; i loved her character too - while not as immediately likable as Dan - the need she felt to protect her brother was beautiful; although her conviction for something to be true, just like Dan's, outwitted her sometimes!
A Boy Called Hope should be your companion through these dark, gloomy nights, when the rain is falling and you need a little joy and light in your life. It will make you cry, it will make you laugh, and it will make you smile - it is a book that you will not want to leave until the last page has been turned and the last words have been absorbed. It is a book about new beginnings, about friendship, about forgetting, about remembering, about believing; about hope. And ultimately, it is a book about loving, with all your heart - people you may not see, people that you may not speak to; but people that will always hold a special place in your heart no matter what.
