BOOKS + WORDS // guest post

08 July 2016

Hey there Hawwa's readers, I'm Areeba from Not Your Type Blog. I'm a creative lifestyle blogger & an art child. And today I'm here to bring this beautiful blog of Hawwa's a guest post. Let's go.
I'm obsessed with books and reading and writing. Words matter to me. They're powerful enough to turn our world upside down in just 2 seconds. That's why I believe in writers and their words, they can bring a revolution in me. And below I'm sharing my MOST favourite words from my favourite books.
"If you have no reason or ability to accomplish anything, then just practice the art of becoming."
“Imagination was a dangerously captivating magic for those compelled to be realistic in life, and words could be poisonous for those destined always to be silenced.”
-from The Bastard of Istanbul
[This book is heartbreakingly beautiful. It haunted me for days and I couldn't get it out of my head. And it's about Istanbul, a city I've never been to but I'm mad about it].
“Some cities you go to because you want to; some cities you go to because they want you to.”
“Sometimes, for the soul to thrive, the heart needs to be broken."
"Centre of the universe was neither in the East nor in the West. It was where one surrendered to love. Sometimes it was where one buried a loved one."
-from The Architect's Apprentice
[I fell for it because it tells the history and buildings of Istanbul. It's beautiful, chilling and sad at the same time - both books above are by Elif Shafak. She is one of my most favourite writers and she can be very cruel with her words but I love them anyway]

"I don't know that we are actually human at this point, those of us who are like most of us, who grew up with TV and movies and now the Internet. If we are betrayed, we know the words to say; when a loved one dies, we know the words to say. If we want to play the stud or the smart-ass or the fool, we know the words to say. We are all working from the same dog-eared script.."
“She’s easy to like. I’ve never understood why that’s considered a compliment - that just anyone could like you.”
“You drink a little too much and try a little too hard. And you go home to a cold bed and think, That was fine. And your life is a long line of fine.”
-from Gone Girl
(I'M OBSESSED WITH EVERYTHING ABOUT GONE GIRL. It's written by Gillian Flynn and I've read all the books by her. It's fierce and mysterious and will leave you awestruck)
“Don't punish yourself,' she heard her say again, but there would be punishment and pain, and there would be happiness, too. That was writing.”
“I'm always finding humans at their best and worst. I see their ugly and their beauty and I wonder how the same can be both.”
"You can't eat books, sweetheart."
-from The Book Thief
[This book made me an emotional wreck and I couldn't get over it for too long. This one is worth your tears and time. Please read it if you haven't already and love it]
What are some of your favourite quotes, babies?

  1. Oh I absolutely adore Elif Shafak (although I've only read Honour and watched Elif Shafak's TED talk). She writes so well, and her metaphors string together whole worlds. It is beautiful.

  3. “Sometimes, for the soul to thrive, the heart needs to be broken." THIS IS SO TRUE. I loved reading this, loved your photos, too! I now want to go to Istanbul! Also, my desire to reread The Book Thief is a never-ending upward curve of longing, a maelstrom of irrepressible yearning. It must happen this summer. It must.

    1. I thinK I've been to Istanbul, but i was very young. I know don't count any country that I've gone to as a 'place that I've gone to' unless I have photos I've taken from there...;P
UM, Emily. I am so disappointed in you. READ THE BOOK THIEF ALREADY.
