SKETCHBOOK STORIES || chapter five [a study of time]

19 March 2016

JANUARY: 2016 // the sky is a paint palette of dark grey and black smudges, pools and washes; steel-coloured clouds float over the horizon, dripping rain onto people's bare heads, hoods, and umbrellas.
SCHEDULE: /sleep /wake /dress /eat /leave /travel /college lessons /break (where anyone sensible avoids the canteen which both sounds and looks like a zoo - fun fact: i once walked in there at one end, walked out at the other, and already had a headache from the noise /more lessons /lunch break (aka. carry on working on my art project) /more lessons /4pm: mad dash to the bus stop for no reason, the bus is late - again- /5pm: hopefully home /procrastinate /try revising /eat /sleep /cycle: repeat.

FEBRUARY: 2016 // more rain. more wind. more cold. significant pockets of time are now spent revising for mock exams; the half-term passes by in a blur. mock week comes, goes, and haunts us all for the next week back after the break as results are handed out like unwelcome gifts, words drop to the floor, shatter, puncture us all in the head and heart as we try to grasp what we are told, what we should be revising, what we need to practice, what we did well (not much). i do well, to others' standards - to my own? ye-no. the end of mock week also brings a clear shift in stress-levels: weeks are now being counted down to the real thing: these are the most important exams of your life, they will matter for years to come, just remember, after this exams you will have weeks of free-time: we already know all this, yet we don't at the same time; we try to forget, to ease the stress and panic building up inside us. one day at a time, baby steps. this time will pass.

MARCH: 2016 // it's spring? already? ok, breathe. friday: a strange slot of time when snow falls continuously. then stops. snowballs are thrown, snowmen are built in the college campus: seventeen and eighteen year olds play and shout and squeal as if they are five again, then lunch is over and it's back to work. by the end of the day, all that's left is slush and grey mounds: oh, how picturesque. sarcasm/cynicism are out in full force, people's eyes wilt and droop like flowers that have not been watered (which is an apt simile, considering we haven't (been watered) with enough energy to keep us awake). my little sister asks if she can measure my eyebags with a ruler. it's march? already? everyone needs to breathe. we can do this. two months left. we have tim- oh heck no we don't.
WHAT HAS YOUR 2016 LOOKED/FELT LIKE SO FAR?

  1. OkaaaAAAAY so I'm going to sound a bit like a broken record and say once again: Your art is gorgeous. GORGEOUS, LET ME TELL YOU. I especially love all the architecture in this post's features. I think you've inspired me to dabble in art as well, even though it's mostly errant thoughts that I haven't yet gotten round to adding to my writing yet. And speaking of writing -- I adore your February paragraph! Such a raw and compelling writing style <3

Thank you for stopping by The Devil Orders Takeout
