discussion || book hauls

01 September 2014

A while ago, yes this was written a while ago and is only being published now. Sue me. I finally decided to talk about something that a lot of people have different opinions about: book hauls. I was originally inspired to do this because Nikki from The Paper Sea mentioned she wasn't a fan of these posts and I asked Why? Some love them, some dislike them. Some just find them a waste of time.
"I don't have like, this secret vendetta against them or anything.  Like, I don't dislike them because I'm jealous (okay, I am a little). But mostly I just find they're not very helpful to me.  I get that it's more publicity for the books, etc. but when they're just presented in a list, like most book hauls are, that's not very useful information, especially if I've never heard of that book before.  Why should I care that you received X for review? WHAT THE HECK IS IT? When bloggers don't discuss the books they've received/bought, that means I have to go to Goodreads and manually search for every book to read the synopsis.  And ain't nobody got time for that."- nikki [the paper sea]
Book hauls, for me personally; are chances for me to stare with envy at people's book photography skills. To be very honest, depending on what blog I am on [if the blogger in question has the same taste in books as me or not], I only look at book hauls for the photography. I don't really register what books they actually got unless they look interesting and the little bit they say about them sounds intriguing. As Nikki said, if there is only a sole list of books a blogger has received: I will probably not want to read the post. I don't often get jealous of a blogger's haul. Ok that was a lie.
But honestly, if a blogger has a book that you have been dying to read for months it is normal to want their book. If you don't feel at all jealous of a blogger who owns a book that you have been dying to read what is wrong with you. Are you human? Do you have a heart? Or are you the Tin man before Dorothy found you one? You just have to make sure you don't go too over board with your emotions.
"I love book hauls because I'm shamelessly obsessed with staring at pretty books + I often discover new books that I hadn't heard of. Also I love to see when people have acquired some of my favourites! :)" - ruby [feed me books now]
"I love book hauls because they're a way to discover loads of new books and to salivate over their gorgeous covers. personally, I don't dislike book hauls, but other people might view book hauls as "showing off" or be jealous of that person. It might also be up to personal preference like maybe a person likes reviews and would rather not waste time going through a book haul. Pros: discovering new books, finding something to talk about with the blogger/vlogger (also making friends by fangirling over same ones). - skylar finn [life of a random]"
One thing Skylar said about bonding over books bought/received struck me. Because I've never really thought about that before but it is true. A great opportunity when displaying books is the chance that someone reads your blog who has desperately loved a book you have, and you make friends through that. Take me for example - I see a book by Markus Zusak [The Book Thief], Ruta Sepetys [Between Shades of Gray & Out of the Easy], Erin Morgenstern [The Night Circus], Leigh Bardugo [Shadow and Bone], Jandy Nelson [The Sky is Everywhere], any book by Rainbow Rowell [e.g Landline / Fangirl] or Laini Taylor [Daughter of Smoke and Bone] -the list is actually endless- in someone's book haul post and I go on a rampage. Which I'm pretty sure some of you have had experience of..*hands out aloe vera for bruises and sunglasses to keep the caps lock burn away*.
"Hmmm... I like book hauls because they can spotlight books and bring to your attention books that are perfect for you. I also like them when gorgeous photos of the books are included (there's someone who takes SUCH nice book photos but I can't remember who it is *scratches brain* Nope, I really can't. *wink*" - rachel [booktastic reviews]
WHAT ARE YOUR OPINIONS ON BOOK HAULS? DO YOU AGREE OR DISAGREE WITH ME?

  1. Oooh look it's me. Quoted and all that jazz. HEY, THIS POST WAS WRITTEN AGES AGO. Haha. ;) Like I said above, I looooooove book hauls because y'know, like you said, PHOTOS OF BOOKS.

Also, "I go on a rampage" is no exaggeration. ;D

  3. Fantastic post, Hawwa! I personally LOVE book haul posts, I love admiring a person's book collection and seeing if there are any that interest me and then adding them to my wishlist on Goodreads! :D

  4. I don't do book haul posts on my blog because I get all of my books from the library and I just don't see the point. I also only check out one or two books at a time, so they would be a pretty boring posts! I also don't usually read book haul posts on other blogs-they just don't interest me. Because of my unique situation of only reading library books, there's no point in me looking at piles of ARCs and other books that I don't have access to.

    1. Hmm I see what you mean. I remember when I first started blogging and I didn't receive any books and got all mine from the library or bought them I never really looked at book haul posts, but to be honest I think that was because I just found less of them..and then when I got into photography and started receiving books I read book haul posts much more.

  5. I really like book hauls, especially when there are photographs/vlogs to provide me with more information. Sometimes it's just to drool over pictures, sometimes it's trying to find new recommendations/books I've never heard before. It's also fun to fangirl when I see a book I love or to be a little jealous when someone got a book I've been waiting for. The only thing I don't care for are weekly hauls, because most of the times you don't get much books in one week.. I prefer to see it wrapped up at the end of a month (or at least over a larger period)

    1. Exactly! I agree with you on the weekly haul situation, I can't remember m ever doing them except if I got a lot of books the next week after I had already done a book haul. Usually I do them very sporadically as it takes a long time to collect all my books and take photos and edit and format the posts, usually every two months although I used to try and do them every month.

  6. Oh my gosh! I had forgotten all about this. Oops.

BUT LOOK, I've been quoted. My life is now complete ;)

Great discussion! Book hauls are awesome, again, in my opinion because what more could you ask then to stare and slobber over covers. COVERSSS

  7. Really interesting post.
Personally, I love book hauls - like Ruby said, staring at pretty books is so much fun. And if the photography is done, then you're immediately sucked in.
I do book hauls at Lost In A Library, just to keep record, and in answer to Nikki's problem, I try to say why I've got the book and if I've read it already what I thought of it

    1. Thank you. :) Same here, I waste so much time in my life staring at books...
That's awesome that you do that, I *try* to, usually I do. :)

  8. Interesting post! I really haven't thought about book hauls like this...
Generally speaking, I like book hauls. Especially if it's a blogger who has the same taste as me, I use it as a good way to introduce myself to new books and later on anticipate their thoughts on the book. And I definitely agree that when you spot a book you like on their TBR list, it gives you some common ground.

Oh! And I nominated you for the Liebster Award! Visit my blog for the details.

    1. Yes, I agree, it helps so much when making friends to know you share the same taste in books!

  9. I love book hauls, especially when there is fabulous book photography involved(like yours, Hawwa)! And like you said, when I see my favorite book in someone's haul I'm like: YOU. YOU. YOU ARE MY NEW BEST FRIEND.

And of course, I'm jealous when I see that someone has gotten their hands on the most coveted ARC ever. But seriously, it's all in good fun. I promise to go on some sort of green-eyed rampage. Fo' real.

Like Mel, said weekly hauls can be a little over the top so maybe it's better to go with monthly hauls so you can just include it your monthly wrap up post(i.e. if you do one).

As for me, mostly I post my hauls on Instagram. But occasionally when I'm not feeling too lazy to transfer the image files from my phone to my computer I'll post on the blog too.

    1. Heheh thank you. :) THAT'S WHAT I DO EVERY TIME. I think it creeps people out.
Mmm, I think I've done two monthly wrap-ups in my whole time of blogging? it's just too much effort..and because i schedule my posts I never have the space to post one..:P
Yes, I see lots of hauls on Instagram. I want to do that :)

  10. Nice post! I nominated you for a Liebster Award! (More details at my blog's link: http://thefavouriteslist.blogspot.com/2014/09/i-was-nominated-for-liebster-awards.html) I like the perspective you have about book hauls.

  11. Great post! I personally LOVE book hauls if they've got the blurb of every book included, that way I can actually fangirl over the content rather than just the cover, but I do love it when bloggers with insane photography skills take their own pictures of their books, they look so gorgeous!

  12. I like book hauls, especially if they're videos! But I also enjoy them when they're just a list of books and maybe a few pictures? If it were just a list with some stock photos, it'd be boring but if there's something extra like to show us the books, that'd be really nice!

  14. OMYGOD WE HAVE SO MANY FAVORITE BOOKS IN COMMON. I swear, whenever someone so much as mentions The Book Thief, my heart sings. Anyway. Please don't ever check out my book haul posts (I rarely do them, but still) because my photography skills are horrid and nonexistent. My hand is very unsteady and my phone camera sucks, so yeah. D:

I don't really have strong opinions on book haul posts tbh, they're just pretty eh and unless there's a book I love on there I don't bother commenting. I'd much rather read reviews and discussion posts.

  15. I do love book hauls - specifically, to fangirl in the vibe of "YOU HAVE [insert a book I love here] WHAT THE FEELS YOU'LL LOVE IT SO MUCH ASDKFSDF".

However my book photography skills are utterly pathetic!! Maybe I should start trying more. I mean I know you and Ruby (and others) take cool arty photos of their books .... I just paste in a picture of the cover haha! Maybe next time I'll try harder.

  16. LOLOLOL I forgot all about this!

Yeah, my perspective is still the same AFTER ALL THIS TIME, but that comment about striking up a bond when you have shared books? I hadn't thought about that but I definitely do that too, usually more on Twitter, because it's all OMG YOU BOUGHT [BOOK] ISN'T IT GREAT? And that's valuable too!
