[a trial to read] DNF review: trial by fire

15 July 2014

Title: Trial by Fire
Author: Josephine Angelini
Series: The Worldwalker Trilogy #1
Publisher: Macmillan Children's Books
Publication Date: August 28th 2014
Source/Format: For Review/ARC

Summary: Love burns. Worlds collide. Magic reigns.

This world is trying to kill Lily Proctor. Her life-threatening allergies keep her from enjoying many of the experiences that other teenagers take for granted...which is why she is determined to enjoy her first (and perhaps only) high-school party. But Lily's life never goes according to plan, and after a humiliating incident in front of half her graduating class Lily wishes she could just disappear.

Suddenly Lily is in a different Salem - one overrun with horrifying creatures and ruled by powerful women called Crucibles. Strongest and cruellest of all the Crucibles is Lillian . . . Lily's identical other self in this alternate universe. This new version of her world is terrifyingly sensual, and Lily is soon overwhelmed by new experiences. Lily realizes that what makes her weak at home is exactly what makes her extraordinary in New Salem. It also puts her life in danger. Thrown into a world she doesn't understand, Lily is torn between responsibilities she can't hope to shoulder alone, and a love she never expected.

But how can Lily be the saviour of this world when she is literally her own worst enemy? -goodreads
When I first heard about this book I was slightly dubious. I had never read any of Josephine Angelini's books before so I couldn't make judgement; so I checked on Goodreads - and after seeing all the hyper fangirling going on I was like this:
-then when I started reading I was, let's say, a *little disappointed*, why? the teenage *activities* going on...
The writing you ask, what about the writing? Mediocre, I will say. A tad dry. A little like stale bread left in the open for a week.
Five chapters in I gave up. I am not normally that person that gives up so early but this book just made me sigh:
So my overall thoughts? I can't make a complete opinion as I didn't finish the book but, well, look above. Other than that?
While I obviously, did not love this book, I just wanted to make sure I point out that I do not think everyone will feel the same way about this book. I have never done a DNF review before purely because of this and the fact that I always feel bad afterwards saying something negative about a book. Because books take time and effort and stress and hard work to write, I know that, I've tried [and failed] to write many books. So it never seems completely ok for me to write a DNF review for a book an author has obviously tried very hard to create. Hence the lack of DNF posts. But, I decided I would start:
a] Because some people think I read every single book I pick start and never DNF. NOT TRUE!
b] I'm going to make them less wordy and more visual [any excuse to add gifs.] to add humour and show that while I did not love the book, I am not bashing it and being a horrible person towards the author, I appreciate that they have laboured over the writing of their book, I personally did not love it, but I am sure others will, I know others will - I've seen the reviews.

  1. Firstly - YAY FOR GIFS.

They're the best. I haven't read Josephine's books yet but I've heard that her Starcrossed series is quite good and I have the first two books in the trilogy which I must still read.

Great review <3 and thanks for being honest! :)

  4. I always find it really difficult to write DNF reviews because there is a lot less to comment on, but I thought this was done brilliantly. THE GIFS were BRILLIANT - especially the one of Snape/Voldemort and the 11th Doctor. Then again I'm kind of obliged to say that as a Potterhead and Whovian.
    GREAT. GREAT. GREAT. GREAT.

      Thanks. :)

  5. I quite liked the first book in the Starcrossed series, though it feels like ages ago that I read it now. I wasn't sure about this one initially, but the reviews that I'd read so far managed to convince me. You have me reconsidering again lol. :P I might just wait till it releases!

  6. Pretty much saved a bundle of these GIFs... Loving this style of post for a DNF review! I think I've only ever wrote one DNF review before on a website, and that was for Beautiful Creatures. I felt SO bad but the pacing was so slow and the plotline was so BORING and... I just couldn't continue with it. Funnily enough, I ended up LOVING one of the co-author's other books, Idols.

  10. I've tried quite a few of her books, but I've never been able to get into one of Josephine Angelini's books, though to a certain point I think I would probably enjoy them. Maybe I should try again, though perhaps not with this!
You did a really wonderful review, and that you speak of how much you dislike DNFing and writing reviews for those books really was honest and wonderful, so basically I think you did a really wonderful job!

  11. Hahhaha, I saw your comment on my WOW post about having this as a DNF and decided to snoop for your review! Ah, I'm so sad that you didn't like it but I will give it a go, with a lower bar set in terms of expectations. Loved the GIFs, it did really help portray how you were feeling ;)

  12. Aw no! sad you couldn't finish Trial By Fire. I was hoping to read it soon but I haven't actually seen a good review... Which is a shame, because Angelini's STARCROSSED trilogy is just amazing. I've reread it so many times xD I think I'll be giving TBF a miss though!
    Gee:)
