top ten winter reads

24 January 2014

When I saw this 'Top Ten' list on Ruby's blog I asked if I could participate too because I thought it was an amazing idea. Winter is my favourite season for reading because I absoultely hate being cold, so I tend to leave the snow for my siblings to play in while I curl up under a blanket with a nice cup of tea and disappear into one of my favourite books. So without further ado..
THE GOOSE GIRL and WONDER and THE GARBAGE KING
. If you know me, you'll know that THE GOOSE GIRL is my favourite book of all time, ever, ever, {amongst others...}. The writing is exquisite The story-line is perfect and the characters are wonderful. This book, just GAH, you must read it, and if you're friends with me and you've still not read it, how dare you betray me.
. WONDER was the first ever review book and ARC that i received when I started this blog thanks to the wonderful Luisa Plaja and to say I started reviewing with a bang is an understatement. This book made me cry and laugh and smile and make sure it is on your winter reading list? okay?
. I had never read any of this author's other books before I read THE GARBAGE KING, but since then - I've read every single one. It's the perfect book to curl up with and will tug at your heart strings: the author is now a firm favourite for my whole family, everyone reads her books and rejoices when a new one comes out!
FLYAWAY and THE WEIGHT OF WATER
. FLYAWAY was the first book I read by Lucy Christopher and definitely won't be the last. This book was a lovely feel-good novel about friendships that melted my heart into a puddle on the floor {not that i'm trying to say my heart is made of ice! ;p}
. I adore novels in verse, THE WEIGHT OF WATER being the first ever one I read. It's pulls you into the stroy with ease and doesn't let you out of its clutches until the end, but you really don't want to leave anyway! It's a perfect winter read.
GEEK GIRL and REBECCA
. You always need a good book to make you laugh out loud in winter, laughing makes you warm, and I DON'T LIKE being cold. Also, well, they're funny and hilarious and by the end of it you feel happy, no matter how grim it looks outside. And GEEK GIRL is the best book for that!
. REBECCA is a creepy, dark, amazingly well-written book that will give you chills creeping up your spine no matter how hot it is under your blanket. So make sure you have a nice cup of tea to warm you up after you've devoured the last page!
BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY and HARRY POTTER and THE WOLF PRINCESS
. Oh what do I say about this book other than the fact that it is sad, will make you cry; it's one of my favourite books of all time - i could re-read it every week and never get tired - and is written wonderfully. You must read BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY now, you will not regret it.
. HARRY POTTER, well, Winter at Hogwarts, Mrs Weasley's Jumpers, butter beer, food, food, food; need I say more?
. THE WOLF PRINCESS draws you in immediately with its crystal wonderland that glitters like jewels in the winter sunlight. I love reading this book purely because it's written well, and, errm, it's a way for me to ice-skate and play in snow without actually getting cold...;)
Have you read any of these? what are your favourite winter reads? leave a comment to tell me so i can expand my list!

  1. Fun list! I haven't heard of a few of these, so I'll have to look them up. I really want to try some of these though: Between Shades of Grey, Geek Girl, and I've heard a lot of good things about Wonder. Great post! Will definitely be checking some of these out.

(and I hear you about just letting your siblings play outside. I'm from Florida, so we don't get snow, but it's still way too cold for my comfort)

  2. Harry Potter books are perfect for the snowy season! Well, for any season but especially winter! You can imagine your sitting beside one of the high-arched windows looking out at the snow-covered Hogwarts grounds... Seriously. If I could live in a story it'd be that one.

I already know you hold a slight grudge toward me for not loving Between Shades of Grey as much as everyone else BUT, I am planning on reading other books by the author - so maybe my love will grow. *looks shady*

I remember when everyone was receiving The Wolf Princess and I was SO jealous! It looks great and I REALLY want it! Hopefully one day soon, eh! ;D

    1. *cough* yes *cough* i may or may not secretly be hermione (among other book characters) so. *whispers* i'm writing this sitting by a high arched window looking over the snow-covered Hogwarts grounds. you jealous? ;p

YES I DO. *taps foot* i can't believe you didn't like it as much as i did! ;) but, each to their own. Out of The Easy was just as good if not better (if you like character driven-stories more than plot-driven - not that i think Between Shades of Gray was TOO plot driven, but compared to Out of The Easy, < that one had more charismatic characters etc.

Awwwh you never got one. :( MAYBE SOMEDAY. *wink*)

  3. I really want to read The Weight of Water because I've heard fantastic things about the book and Sarah Crossan is one of my favorite teachers. Geek Girl looks like such a cute book as well I've seen many positive reviews for it. Cute books that make you laugh are right up my alley, so I'm definitely going to be trying to look into buying that one sometime soon. I actually wasn't a big fan of Out of the Easy because I'm a plot-oriented reader so the lack of plot didn't really appeal to me at first. Thanks for sharing!

Awwwh yeah, i definitely think Out of The Easy compared to Between Shades of Gray was more character orientated. so maybe you'll like BSoG better?

  6. YES to Harry Potter. Probably the perfect Winter reads ever; I am so upset I missed out on the Harry Potter marathons during Christmas. They complete Winter Vacation. And I've been meaning to read Wonder for a while. Maybe this winter will be the time I actually do get around to it!
