Blurb: Nobody's perfect... or are they?
Abigail always knew that she was different, but what she didn't know was just how different.
That was until her 16th birthday, when her parent's revealed a devastating secret that confirmed her worst fears and changed her life forever. Abigail is an Allelobrid: one of five children born as a result of their parents illegal science experiment in genetic engineering. The aim: to create a perfect human. Yet perfection comes at a price. Forced into a life on the run, Abigail finds love, danger and an organisation that will stop at nothing to get what they want. When lives are at risk and freedom is threatened - could being perfect be enough to survive? - from goodreads
In one word I would describe Freaks as thrilling. It has all the little things that would appeal to readers of action-packed, exciting novels that make you feel like you're right there with the main-characters, battling their enemies and working out their plans, and I enjoyed it immensely. Abigail is an Allelobrid, although she didn't know that until she turned sixteen. She had always known she was different, always known there was something unique about her - why else would her parents make sure she never stood out from the crowd even though she was miles better than everyone else and everything she did? So when her parents finally admit the reason why she has been forced to act 'normal' she is shocked, her life has been turned upside down. And why?...She is one of five genetically engineered children who are perfect. Who are stronger, more clever, and who will live for hundreds of years longer than everyone they know and love. They were illegally created in a science lab by their parents who then fled into hiding, trying to keep their children a secret. Because the head of the science lab they were created in wants to kidnap them, and experiment on them - and use them for his own benefit.
I loved Abigail's character: she was brave and strong-willed and determined, but at the same time she feels like she isn't. She feels too normal compared to the other four Allelobrids. She feels intimidated and a little overwhelmed by the others, for she was made to look like her mother, 'normal' whereas they have been made to look as perfect as they other. Model-esque and beautiful. She feels to plain and average next to them; however, in the book - we see how this is shown to be her greatest strength. She always puts others first, and she risks her life to save the people who she has met after so long, who she was created with. She finally has people she can call her 'own', her family, and after a life of living on the sidelines of everything, after spending her energy trying to blend in rather than stand out - she finally has people who understand her and accept her for who she is, and not what she can do better than others.
The pacing on the novel was perfect, just enough action to get your heart racing but not too much for you think, 'wha- what's going on?!'  There were little bits of the book that I thought slowed the book down for the worse, like when Max and Abigail's relationship was building up towards the end I thought that it interfered with the plot and wasn't unbelievable as such, but was a little unnecessary because if my life was in danger, to be honest i wouldn't really care less about romance, i would be running for my life!
Overall I found Freaks to be a great book full of breath-taking and some, heart-breaking scenes that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. A promising debut novel from an awesome author I would recommend it to everyone who likes action but also doesn't mind plots that slow down and then start up again rapidly. Oh and can we just talk about the cover for a minute? PRETTY IS IT NOT!
*Thank you to the awesome Lisa M Forester, your book was freaking awesome..{see what I did there?!}
