Blurb:
Harriet knows that modelling won’t transform you. She knows that being as uniquely odd as a polar bear isn’t necessarily a bad thing (even in a rainforest). And that the average person eats a ton of food a year, though her pregnant stepmother is doing her best to beat this.
What Harriet doesn’t know is where she’s going to fit in once the new baby arrives.
With summer plans ruined, modelling in Japan seems the perfect chance to get as far away from home as possible. But nothing can prepare Harriet for the craziness of Tokyo, her competitive model flatmates and her errant grandmother’s ‘chaperoning’. Or seeing gorgeous Nick everywhere she goes.
Because, this time, Harriet knows what a broken heart feels like.
Can geek girl find her place on the other side of the world or is Harriet lost for good? - from goodreads

“My name is Harriet Manners, and I am still a geek.”
Harriet Manners is back, and she couldn't be more of a walking disaster. Trying to decide how to mend her broken heart, or if she actually wants it to be mended, and wondering how she is going to cope with the new baby is one thing; but throw in the school holidays, complete with an absent best friend and a modelling job in Tokyo with her strong minded grandma (or so she thinks) is on another level altogether.
WARNING: Do not eat or drink while reading this book. You may find those substances appearing out of ones nose due to excessive laughter.
This book...oh, where do I start! I thought Geek Girl was good, but Model Misfit was on a whole other level. Holly Smale has managed to face the terrors of second book syndrome with ease and well and truly knock it out. You read the first book, so you think you know Harriet? Get to know her better in the second book.. You think you love Lion Boy? Well...there is no end to that boy's charm i can tell you. You think Wilbur was funny in Geek Girl? HAVE YOU HEARD THE DUDE REALLY GO ALL OUT?! You think you know all there is to know about Yuka Ito, the small and deadly fashion designer? Well you don't.
The characters in this book were really developed and each was given more of a spotlight which i really loved. Even the secondary characters weren't forgotten and I enjoyed watching the relationships between them all get tested and strengthen as a result. The relationship between Nat and Harriet we got to appreciate more as we see them have their ups and downs but get through their problems in the end, and it shows us that you can still be best friends even if you are completely different, as long as you are willing to work on the friendship and not give up at the first hurdle but support each other.
Toby, my little stalker..you just don't give up do you?! Some of the things he does for Harriet made me just want to hug him because even though he may seem a little ''odd'' he shows in this book that he isn't just an obsessive, he really genuinely likes Harriet and he shows what a good friend he is when she most needs it. Although...some bits...AAWWKKWAARRDD....;)
I don't really want to talk about Nick otherwise i'll probably spoil something, knowing me ;p but..LION BOY!! <3 nbsp="" p="">Geek Girl: Model Misfit definitely doesn't disappoint. Holly Smale's writing is so fresh and smooth and addictive. I literally couldn't get enough of her facts and Wilbur-isms and I loved how the words flowed smoothly and didn't feel forced, the book was funny because she made it funny, she didn't force anything and that's what i liked. Holly Smale is naturally a person with a quirky sense of humour and because she has first hand experience with being the geeky teen model, awkwardly ploughing her way through the business while desperately trying not to fall over in her stiletto heels,  the book feels genuine and radiates ease and comedy; and because of that the moments that Harriet feels awkward, the cringey moments, the romantic ones, the disasters that happen, we feel them as if they had happened to us.

Quote Love:
"I'm not sure you're geographical knowledge of the afterlife is very strong, do i need to draw you a map?"
"Maybe this is what happens to the butterfly and the frog. Maybe they go to so much effort to grow wings and legs and run away, and when they see a little bit of the world they just feel sad and lonely and end up hopping straight back home again. Where they belong."
*Thank you to Harper Collins for sending me a copy of this book free of charge in exchange for an honest review.

  1. Hahaha, I was reading your review in a cafe and pulling all sorts of funny faces from trying not to laugh... The elderly ladies at the table opposite mine gave me a weird look when I accidentally snorted... ;D I was sent a copy of Model Misfit to review but I hadn't read the first one yet, so I bought it over the weekend and I'm reading it at the moment. Really enjoying it - I do love novels that make me laugh. Fab review, Hawwa!

  6. I think you've just managed to convince me to pick up the first book! I've been hearing nothing but good things about it, but I've never really considered buying a copy. You've completely changed my mind now. Plus I could do with something fun! So glad to hear the sequel is a strong one. :)
